Chris Wilson’s Primary students – ages 6, 7, and 8 – discuss the Timeline of Power and Change, a project that developed from their study of primary sources selected from Baseball and Jackie Robinson, a collection from the Library of Congress American Memory. In this lesson, Mr. Wilson — a teacher at UCLA Lab School and an alumnus of the Cotsen Foundation for the ART of TEACHING — addressed the second-grade California Content Standard in Social Studies requiring that “students understand the importance of individual action and character and explain how heroes from long ago and the recent past have made a difference in others’ lives.”
