Chris Wilson, a teacher at UCLA Lab School and alumnus of the Cotsen Foundation for the ART of TEACHING, discusses the use of primary sources selected from Baseball and Jackie Robinson, a collection from the Library of Congress American Memory, and the resulting class project called the Timeline of Power and Change. In this lesson, Mr. Wilson addressed the second-grade California Content Standard in Social Studies requiring that “students understand the importance of individual action and character and explain how heroes from long ago and the recent past have made a difference in others’ lives.”
